Northern Minnesota to see 70 degrees this weekend

Email

The area experienced a blend of clouds and some sunshine on Wednesday. The winds finally backed-down on Wednesday as well after very wind conditions on Monday and Tuesday. Park Rapids had a peak wind gust of 40 mph on Tuesday, but parts of the state had winds in excess of 50 mph. A northerly flow helped to usher-in the cooler air. Alexandria only had a high of 41 degrees on Wednesday. This is near average, but after all of the record heat that we have enjoyed that seemed chilly to most of us.

By Wednesday night, we had a mostly clear to partly cloudy sky with lows in the 30s common. A few upper 20s were found across parts of northern Minnesota. The winds were light and that caused a great deal of radiational cooling.  As a result, we had some frost around the state by Thursday morning.

For Thursday, the clouds were on the increase as our next weather disturbance pushed through the state. Some showers and thunderstorms developed as an area of low pressure and a frontal boundary system pushed through the state. Highs on Thursday reached the 50s and 60s across the state. The winds also picked up a bit once again gusting to near 30 mph.

The good news is that some drier air settled-in for Friday and the weekend. We could be near 80 degrees on Sunday across southern Minnesota. Most of northern Minnesota will enjoy the 70s for highs on Sunday.

Colder air and rain mixed with some light snow is possible, once again by Monday night into Tuesday. The best chance of snow will be across far northern Minnesota.

Weather history

On this date in 1963 Park Rapids had a record high of 74 degrees!

Weather facts

Waterspout is a small, weak tornado, which is not formed by a storm-scale rotation. It is generally weaker than a supercell tornado and is not associated with a wall cloud or mesocyclone. It may be observed beneath cumulonimbus or towering cumulus clouds and is the water equivalent of a landspout.
