Northern lights put on a show in northern Minn. skies

Northern lights

"When I first saw the aurora doing its crazy moves in twilight I knew we were in for something special. The northeastern sky – still dusky blue – lit up with multiple rays and arcs. It only got better as darkness settled in," News Tribune photo editor Bob King wrote on his Astro Bob Areavoices blog early Friday morning. "The show went on and on and on. Right when you thought nature would call it a wrap, the aurora charged up again."

The display, sparked by the Earth passing through the magnetic field of the solar wind, continued until it was washed out by brightening skies at dawn.

More northern lights displays are possible tonight, though they are notoriously difficult to predict.
