New fleet for vets
Three Ford Flex vehicles have been purchased to transport regional veterans to medical appointments at veterans facilities. Local and state vets groups raised $130,000 for the purchase of the vehicles, which will be stationed in Park Rapids, Bemidji and Wheatland. The funds also go to pay the cost of a dispatcher. Seven volunteer drivers have been lined up. Vets will be transported to the Fargo VA Wednesdays and Fridays for doctor appointments. Richard Martin, representing the Minnesota Disabled American Veterans, Randy Benham of the Park Rapids Legion and Hubbard County Veterans Service Officer Greg Remus. Benham is one of the drivers. Remus said Ford Motor Co. discounts the vehicle prices for veterans. The VA will pay for gas and upkeep of the vehicle. Vets will be picked up at their homes.
