Nevis town events boost municipal liquor store sales

July has proven to be a record-breaking month for the Nevis Liquor Store, the muni reporting a net income of $25,893.

Independence Day, Muskie Days and, in recent years, the Pig Races have generally sent the month's figures into highest-of-the-year territory.

This year's all-school reunion, celebrating the district's 100 years, may have contributed to the 24 percent increase in profit from July 2011, manager Lisa Kamrowski said. Hundreds arrived to commemorate the centennial.

Year-to-date liquor store earnings are $28,691.

In other action, the council:

n Approved the purchase of a thermal imaging camera for the Nevis Fire Department at a cost of up to $11,000, which will be reimbursed by gaming funds.

Fire chief Kerry Swenson explained the unit not only assists on fire scenes, but can be used to find missing people in the woods. "It gives us another use, not just structure fires.

"My concern is that it will go missing during deer season," he joked.

The council also approved Brian Vredenburg as the newest member of the Nevis Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

The department will advertise for bids to replace the tank on the tanker. "The truck chassis is great," Swenson told the council. Ongoing patching of the tank's rust holes led to the decision to replace it with an aluminum or poly model.

n Approved a propane pre-buy bid of $1.31 per gallon from Gas Service for the 1,000-gallon tank at the city office.

This compares with last year's price of $1.79 per gallon.

n Reviewed and approved the Nevis Fire Relief Association's pension plans.

The current retirement amount is $1,050 per year.

Relief Association treasurer Don Umthun introduced Brent Nicklason who will replace him in the near future.

n Approved a bid of $14,595 for the 2005 Dodge pickup truck.

n Reported a sanitation pump will be replaced at a cost of $8,700 with another being repaired.

n Approved a quote of $3,050 from Mobile Ready Mix of Menahga for work at the fire hall.

n Agreed to review plans for a planter box at Resthaven Cemetery, Uff da Days Committee members volunteering to draft the proposal.

n Learned the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22 regarding a variance request from Keith and Renee Thielen.
