Nevis' Schuldt advances to state in 1,600, 3,200; Feder qualifies in high jump

Nevis' Bryon Schuldt and Annessa Feder are returning to the state Class A track and field meet as Section 8A champions.

At Saturday's section meet at Park Rapids, Schuldt won the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run to earn his fifth consecutive trip to state while Feder finished first in the high jump to qualify for state for the second time.

Schuldt, a junior, entered the section meet as the top seed in both distance races. At the Subsection 8-29A meet, Schuldt won the 1,600 run in 4:50.67 and the 3,200 run in 10:17.83. On Saturday, Schuldt dropped his time to a 4:36.06 to win the 1,600 run and clocked a 10:03.72 to run away with the title in the 3,200 run.

Feder, a senior, opened the meet by winning the high jump by clearing 5 feet. Feder cleared that same height to finish second at the subsection meet.

The Tigers also contended for state berths in three other events en route to placing sixth in the boys meet with 50 points.

Stephen Keezer, Matt Gustafson, Shawn Anglin and Sean Howes finished second in the 4 x 200 relay with a time of 1:34.65. Thief River Falls set a section record with a winning time of 1:32.19. Nevis clocked a 1:35.04 in this relay to win the subsection title.

In the 4 x 100 relay, Keezer, Gustafson, Anglin and Howes took third in 45.63 before Keezer finished third in the 200 dash in 23.55. The 4 x 100 relay won the subsection title in 45.93 while Keezer took first in the 200 dash at the subsection meet with a 23.49.

Gustafson was fourth in the 800 run in 2:10.01, Howes finished fifth in the 300 hurdles in 44.06 and Jordan Feder took eighth in the high jump by clearing 5-8 to round out Nevis' team points. At the subsection meet, Gustafson was second in the 800 run in 2:09.05, Howes was the subsection champ in the 300 hurdles in 44.26 and Feder finished third in the high jump by clearing 5-8.

In the girls meet, the Tigers finished 13th with 22 points.

Feder, Riley Hanson, Dianna Schuldt and Paige Walters took fourth in the 4 x 400 relay in 4:21.71. That relay was third at the subsection meet in 4:17.38.

Also scoring points for the Tigers were Hanson in the 400 dash (fifth in 1:02.22) and Walters in the 100 dash (eighth in 13.48) and 400 dash (seventh in 1:02.73). Hanson took fourth at the subsection meet in 1:02.55 while Walters was second in the 400 dash in 1:01.49 and fourth in the 100 dash in 13.49.

In his four previous state appearances in the 3,200 run, Schuldt finished eighth last year in 9:43.50, third in 9:41.32 in 2009, seventh in 9:56.41 in 2008 and 18th in 10:34.30 in 2007. Feder tied for 12th place in the high jump by clearing 5 feet as a sophomore in 2009.

Schuldt and Feder will be looking to bring home medals from the state Class A meet, which will be held at Hamline University in St. Paul. Schuldt will run in the 3,200 finals on Friday and in the 1,600 finals Saturday while Feder will compete in the high jump finals on Friday. Schuldt is seeded 10th out of 16 runners in the 1,600 and 12th out of 17 runners in the 3,200 while Feder is tied for 18th out of 21 state qualifiers in the high jump.
