Nevis, Menahga girls eliminated in Section 5A West quarterfinals

Nevis and Menahga had their girls basketball seasons come to an end with losses in the Section 5A West quarterfinals Thursday night.

Nevis, the No. 5 seed, opened the playoffs with a 36-25 loss at No. 4 Pine River-Backus while No. 9 Menahga was eliminated with a 74-41 loss at No. 1 Bertha-Hewitt. Menahga opened the playoffs with a 63-43 win at No. 8 Browerville last Tuesday night.

Nevis ends the year with an 18-9 record while Menahga finishes at 8-18.

Sheley, Lemberg lead PR-B

Tatum Sheley scored 14 points and Hannah Lemberg added 10 points in leading Pine River-Backus past Nevis.

PR-B prevailed in this defensive battle, which saw the No. 4 seed hold a 10-6 lead at the half. PR-B improved to 19-8 with the win.

Becca Gunkel (9) and Riley Hanson (6) combined for 15 points for Nevis, which defeated PR-B in two of three meetings during the regular season.

NEVIS: Gunkel 9, Hanson 6, Walters 4, Allman 4, Hjelseth 2.

PINE RIVER-BACKUS: Sheley 14, Lemberg 10, Wangberg 7, Hamilton 3, Ackerman 2.

Bears eliminate Braves

Bertha-Hewitt, the No. 4-ranked Class A team in the state, eliminated Menahga.

Katie Miller ended her senior season with 16 points while Lindsey White added 13 points for the Braves.

B-H improved to 22-3 on the season.

Braves open with win

The Braves relied on a balanced scoring attack to defeat Browerville in the first round of the section tournament last Tuesday night at Browerville.

Tarah Cleveland (16), White (13), Miller (12) and Amelia Pho (10) scored in double figures to lead the Braves, who defeated Browerville 69-54 on Feb. 22.

Browerville ended the season with a 10-14 record.
