Nevis and Menahga opened the boys basketball season with victories Friday night.

Hunter Schroeder scored 20 points and Nolan Toft had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists as Nevis rolled to an 80-40 victory over Laporte at the Tiger Arena.

Dylan Stenberg added 15 points and four steals while Shawn Anglin had six rebounds for Nevis, which jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Schroeder had three assists, Taylor Chase had three steals and Stenberg had three rebounds for the Tigers, who led 52-13 at the half.

"I thought our defensive pressure was pretty effective and we were very unselfish with the ball," said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. "We had balanced scoring and I was really impressed with the way the kids made the extra pass and hit open shots. We got the season off to a good start, but we learned that we still have a lot to work on in terms of positioning and picking up too many fouls."

The Tigers travel to Pine River-Backus Thursday night.

Tom Gruchow and Marlin Aho had double-doubles in leading Menahga to a 69-56 win at Hill City.

Gruchow had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Aho had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Braves.

Derek Pihlaja led the way for Menahga with 24 points while Kasey Tyge had 10 rebounds and eight assists. Aho added four steals, four assists and two blocked shots.

The Braves host Sebeka Friday night.
