Nevis boys rout Warroad 79-46 in 3rd-place game
A dominating first half led the Nevis boys basketball team to a 79-46 win over Warroad for third place at the Park Rapids Holiday Tournament last Saturday.
Gavin Becker scored 12 points, Courtland Chase and Jordan Feder combined for 12 points, and Brandon Spain-Brist hit a pair of 3-pointers as Nevis claimed a 41-11 lead at the half.
A 3-pointer and two layups by Becker and a 3-pointer and jumper by Griffin Chase pushed the lead to 56-19 with 13:53 to play. A jumper by Michael Babler, two 3-pointers by Austin Becker, a 3-pointer by Griffin Chase, and two jumpers by Courtland Chase made it 72-32 with 5:43 to play. Gavin Hitchcock hit a 3-pointer for a 79-40 lead with 1:58 to go.
Becker (19), Courtland Chase (13), Griffin Chase (12), Austin Becker (10), Spain-Brist (8) and Feder (8) led a balanced scoring attack for the Tigers, who improved to 5-2 on the season. Courtland Chase had five rebounds, five assists and five steals while Gavin Becker had seven assists and four steals. Feder and Austin Becker had four rebounds each and Griffin Chase added four assists and three steals.
“We were able to jump out early on a very young Warroad team and coast to a win,” said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. “A lot of our reserves got extra playing time, which is a nice reward for all that they do in practice to help the starters prepare. The guys were really unselfish on offense setting up teammates for wide-open shots by making the extra pass.”

Tigers fall to Frazee in overtime
The Tigers rallied from a 54-45 deficit with 2:10 to play to force overtime before falling to Frazee 66-63 in the tournament semifinals last Friday.
Two 3-pointers and a pair of jumpers by Griffin Chase and a 3-pointer by Spain-Brist gave Nevis a 19-17 lead before Frazee closed out the half with a 7-0 run in the final 1:30 to carry a 24-19 advantage into the break.
Four 3-pointers by Cory Wokasch kept Frazee in front 42-29 with 12:01 to play before a 3-pointer and jumper by Griffin Chase, two jumpers and a 3-pointer by Gavin Becker, and a basket off a rebound by Courtland Chase made it 50-45 with 5:21 remaining before the Hornets claimed a 54-45 lead with 2:52 to go.
A 3-pointer by Griffin Chase and three free throws by Gavin Becker cut the gap to 54-52 with 28 seconds remaining before Griffin Chase hit a jumper before the buzzer to tie the game at 54-54 at the end of regulation play.
A three-point play by Tanner Karger, a basket off a rebound by Brady Bellefuelle, and a layup and another three-point play by Karger gave Frazee a 64-58 lead with 1:51 to play in overtime. Griffin Chase hit a 3-pointer with 1:39 to go to make it 64-61, but Karger hit two free throws with 31 seconds remaining to give Frazee a 66-61 lead. Griffin Chase’s two free throws with 18 seconds to go concluded the scoring.
Griffin Chase hit six 3-pointers and finished with 28 points while Gavin Becker added 14 points to lead the Tigers. Feder had eight rebounds, Courtland Chase had six rebounds and three steals, and Griffin Chase and Gavin Becker had five assists each.
Karger (27) and Wokasch (23) combined for 50 points to pace the Hornets, who improved to 3-4.
“Frazee’s size and physicality gave us a little bit of trouble, but we were able to stay in the game,” said Kramer. “It was a little disappointing to let this one get away after we erased a deficit down the stretch to get it to overtime.”
