Nevis boys defeat Laporte, Northland
The Nevis boys basketball team relied on defense and perimeter shooting to pick up a pair of wins last week.
Defense led the Tigers to a 49-37 Northland Conference victory over Laporte last Friday night. Gavin Becker was the only player in double figures with 14 points for the Tigers, who led 24-16 at the half. Griffin Chase (9) and Jordan Feder (7) combined for 16 points while Courtland Chase led the way with seven rebounds. Feder had six rebounds, Brandon Spain-Brist had four rebounds, Griffin Chase had three assists and Austin Becker had three steals as Nevis improved to 5-4 in the conference. Laporte fell to 0-10 in the conference and 5-12 overall.
“This was a good win for us in conference play,” said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer. “Points were tough to come by as both teams are very familiar with one another. I was obviously happy with the defense as we were able to hold them to under 40 points.”
Gavin Becker’s 28 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Griffin Chase’s 20 points and four assists led the Tigers to a 74-64 win over Northland Remer last Saturday.
Courtland Chase added 8 points and 11 rebounds while Brett Byer had four rebounds for the Tigers, who led 38-32 at the half en route to improving to 10-6 on the season. Northland fell to 5-11.
“I thought we executed a whole lot better and we just flat out shot the ball better as well,” said Kramer, whose team hit eight 3-pointers. “We also did a nice job on the glass against some interior size of Northland’s post players.”
