A handheld sound meter was no match for measuring the intensity, sounds and excitement felt by the spectators in the Fargodome on Friday during Monster Jam 2009.

With the turn of the ignition key, the monster trucks' custom-built engines began purring, but roared when the drivers revved them. The thousands of fans in attendance Friday night cheered in response as the trucks entered the venue.

The Forum attended Friday night's event armed with a sound meter. When the trucks' engines revved, the meter reading maxed at the highest decibel level. The number "100" flashed on the digital meter's screen as the trucks circled the venue's floor and fans cheered.

"The loudness and smell" of the trucks' emissions and the dirt kicked by the trucks' colossal tires attracts Amy Vosberg to the event each year.

Its unknown how many were in attendance Friday. Dome officials say at least 23,000 spectators attend Monster Jam during its two-day run each year.

"It's good family entertainment," Vosberg, of Wyndmere, N.D., added. She attended Friday with her sister, Stephanie Zimmel.

"It's the excitement of being able to have all that power," Zimmel, of Wahpeton, N.D., said in describing the adrenaline rush she feels when the trucks are in motion.

The monster truck cast included Grave Digger, Maximum Destruction, Superman and Spike. The trucks, which average 11 feet in height and 12 feet in width, made their laps around the dirt track set up with ramp jumps to help catapult them up to 25 feet in the air.

Zimmel, a fan of Grave Digger, said she enjoys how the trucks operate in a "drive it like you stole it" mode.

"It keeps you wanting to come back," Vosberg added.

Monster Jam's two-day pit stop at the Fargodome ends today. Its final performances are at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
