Miller plays steady golf, claims sixth women's club championship
Shelly Miller took the early lead Saturday and played steady golf on Sunday to capture the Women's Club Championship at Headwaters Country Club.
Miller, who had her string of five straight titles snapped last fall, played steady golf by following an 85 on Saturday with an 84 on Sunday for a 169 and an 11-shot victory.
Miller carded rounds of 42 and 43 during Saturday's first 18 holes for an 85. Miller carded pars on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 8 on the front side and followed with pars on five of the first six holes on the back side to take the early lead.
Defending champion Sharon Paumen carded a 91 on Saturday as pars on No. 1 and No. 8 led to a 46 on the front side and pars on No. 10, No. 11, No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17 led to a 45 on the back side.
Helen Rude was in third place after Saturday's first round with a 101 while Luann Hanson (104), Judy Love (107) and Carol Frisby (117) rounded out the six-golfer field.
A par on No. 3, birdies on No. 4 and No. 5, and a par on No. 7 sparked Miller to a 41 on the front side Sunday. Paumen stayed within striking distance as pars on No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 8 led to a 42 and a seven-shot deficit with nine holes to play.
Miller sealed her sixth club championship with pars on No. 10, No. 16 and No. 18 for a 43 on the back side and a 36-hole total of 169. Paumen carded pars on No. 10, No. 15 and No. 18 for a 47 on the back side and a runner-up score of 180.
Hanson carded a 96 on Sunday to finish third with a 200 while Rude carded a 109 Sunday for a two-day total of 210. Love shot a 218 and Frisby finished with a 230.
Paumen's 89 on Sunday gave her the women's senior title. Paumen also won the senior title in 2010. Hanson won the First Flight with a net 68.
