Sarah Platz always planned to go on a mission trip.

But the Park Rapids resident didn't plan on facing the swine flu outbreak in Mexico, which cut her trip short.

She left in April and was scheduled to come back in June but due to the outbreak, everything was shut down and she returned in May.

Although she got to finish a couple of projects, she was still disappointed.

"I was hoping to continue to do projects," Platz said.

Platz stayed in Mazatlan, a city that sits on the far west side of Mexico City. No swine flu cases were found there, but everyone took precautions.

Part of her mission trip was to work with a children's ministry program every weekend. The schools were shut down and of course the kids stayed home on weekends as well, she said.

"The moms didn't want their kids to go out and be in groups in public," Platz added.

And back home, everyone of her family and friends was also concerned.

In the four weeks she stayed there, Platz worked with the groups Youth With a Mission (YWAM) and Homes for Hope, both are international organizations that have bases all over the world.

She was able to build two houses in a poor community of the city.

"I can't believe their housing situations," Platz said. "It was amazing to be able to help people. Giving them the keys to the building gave them hope of bettering their lives."
