Menahga's new city clerk has started work
Menahga's newly hired city clerk/treasurer/administrator started Monday, in time to attend September's monthly council meeting.
Walter Salo was offered the position after two rounds of interviews. The council offered him a starting salary of $55,000 and a week's vacation after one year. Salo countered with a salary of $60,000 plus two weeks vacation on the books right away and to start accumulating toward a third week off.
Salo accepted an offer of $58,000 with six months probation and a review at that time along with one week of vacation on the books that he would be eligible to take at that time. The council will revisit the vacation request after the six month probationary period.
Salo has experience in city government. He was the city administrator in Cook for four years. He has also worked as executive director for Bois Forte Tribal Council in Nett Lake and as executive director for Range Transitional Housing Agency in Virginia.
The council had two rounds of interviews for the position, which had been vacant since April when Teri Osterman announced her resignation. She had worked for the city for eight years.
