Menahga selects five finalists for city administrator
The Menahga City Council will interview five applicants for the city clerk/treasurer/administrator position.
The city received 19 applications for the position and reviewed them before Monday night's meeting. Each councilmember received a packet with the applications and a checklist to compare qualifications.
Due to data privacy laws councilmembers discussed candidates only by the letter assigned to the application and generalized qualifications, being careful not to identify candidates.
The advertisement for the position said the person hired would report directly to the city council and oversee the administration of a city with a current budget of $2.1 million, which includes police, fire, park and beach, street, sewer and water departments and a municipal liquor store.
Minimum qualifications are a bachelor's degree in public administration or a related field with three years of related experience in public administration, community planning and development, accounting, business and finance. Knowledge in Fund Balance accounting software, updated HR training and planning and zoning experience is helpful.
The council hadn't discussed a salary range until Monday night's meeting. It decided Monday to give the applicants a starting salary range between $43,884 to $60,468 based on experience, which came from a previous pay equity study.
Some of the applicants had master's degrees in public administration and one candidate had 30 years of experience as an administrator. The council narrowed the field to five candidates and plan to have interviews Wednesday, Aug. 4 starting at 8 a.m. The interviews are scheduled in half hour sessions with breaks in between.
