Menahga School District is looking for friends - Facebook friends, that is.

Elementary principal Ariana Wright is the administrator of the page and said she plans to add photos of students participating in activities, updates from staff and more.

The Facebook page can be accessed by going to the Menahga School District website at www.menahga. k12.mn.us and clicking on the button, "Like us on Facebook."

"We've already had 42 likes and we haven't even been shouting about it from the rooftops yet," she said.

According to stats from Google, Wright said there were 119 visits this week, 11 wall posts, 65 regular users and 42 likes.

She would like to continue promoting the school through the Facebook page.

In other business, the board:

n Heard the science scores, which don't yet count toward graduation, were not proficient for the second year in a row.

Menahga School District had 44.4 percent of students proficient in science compared to 46 percent at the state level.

High school principal Dan Stifter said he would like to see improvement. Some curriculum changes have already been implemented this year by moving biology from 10th grade to 9th grade and physical science from 9th grade to 10th grade.

He explained that some of the concepts in physical science are harder for students to grasp and it seemed to make sense to move that to 10th grade.

n Heard that Menahga's ACT scores averaged 20.6 for English compared to the benchmark of 18 and state average of 20.3. The algebra portion averaged 22.3 compared to a benchmark of 22 and state average of 23. Social averaged 22.2 with a benchmark of 21 and state average of 23.2. Biology was 22.4 with a benchmark of 24 and stage average of 22.8.

n Heard enrollment projections for 2012-13. The kindergarten class is projected to have 82 students with a graduating class of 43. For 2013-14, the kindergarten class projection is 75 with a graduating class of 57.

"We're running out of classrooms, desks," Superintendent Mary Klamm said.

The board will have to get creative in the next few years, she said.

n Approved hiring a paraprofessional at 4.75 hours per day at a cost of $14,319.

n Had a closed session to discuss strategy for certified and non-certified negotiations.
