Menahga hosts Browerville in first round of playoffs

Menahga received the No. 4 seed in the West and will host No. 5 Browerville in a Section 5A girls basketball tournament game Thursday night at 7.

The Braves defeated Browerville 60-49 on Feb. 14. The winner of that game will most likely play Upsala, the No. 1 seed in the West, Saturday night at 6 at Wadena. Menahga ended the regular season with an 11-13 record.

In the other half of the bracket, No. 3 Sebeka hosts No. 6 Nevis and No. 2 Verndale hosts No. 7 Bertha-Hewitt Thursday night at 7. The winners of those games meet Saturday night at 7:45 at Wadena. Nevis, which ended the regular season with a 13-10 record, lost to Sebeka 76-44 during the regular season.

Pihlaja leads Braves by Browerville

Shelby Pihlaja scored 27 points in leading the Braves to a 60-49 win over Browerville on Feb. 24.

Tarah Cleveland finished with 19 points and four steals while Jenny Skoog had 15 rebounds and four assists. The Braves made 24 of 28 free throws in the win.

Browerville fell to 9-11.

Cleveland keys win over NYM

Cleveland scored 32 points as Menahga defeated New York Mills 71-50 in a Park Region Conference game on Feb. 15.

Pihlaja added 20 points and Skoog scored 13 points and had eight rebounds and five assists.

The Braves closed out conference play with a 7-5 record to tie Bertha-Hewitt for fourth place. New York Mills fell to 3-8 in the conference and 7-12 overall.

Tatum Sheley led Pine River-Backus to a 71-22 victory over Menahga in the regular-season finale last Tuesday night.

Megan Felthous (14), Autumn Ackerman (14) and Brittany Kelley (12) also scored in double figures as PR-B improved to 20-4.
