Menahga boys follow playoff win over Parkers Prairie with loss to Browerville

     Browerville hit 11 3-pointers to spark a 75-54 win over the Menahga boys basketball team in the second round of the Section 5A North playoffs last Saturday night at Wadena.

     A layup by Kyle Skoog, a pair of jumpers by Austin Rudquist and a jumper by Austen Schwartz gave the No. 4-seeded Braves an 8-5 lead at the 15:05 mark of the first half.

     Browerville, the No. 1 seed, used 3-pointers by Jordan Thielen and Bryce Irsfeld and two layups by Trevor Johnson to spark a 13-2 run for an 18-10 advantage with 11:39 remaining.

     A 3-pointer by Cody Hansmeyer and a layup by Irsfeld pushed the Tigers’ lead to 24-12 before Menahga rallied behind a layup by Calvin Taylor, jumpers by Rudquist and Taylor, three inside baskets by Levi Schwartz, and a three-point play by Rudquist to cut the deficit to 32-29 at the 3:34 mark. A 3-pointer by Grant Heid gave Browerville a 36-30 lead at the break.

     A jumper by Levi Schwartz and two jumpers by Rudquist tied the game at 36-36 with 15:57 to play before Browerville took charge with a 16-3 run. A 3-pointer by Trent Johnson, a 3-pointer by Irsfeld and back-to-back 3-pointers by Hansmeyer gave the Tigers a 52-39 lead with 8:49 to go.

     Irsfeld followed with consecutive 3-pointers as Browerville led 61-42 with 5:26 remaining.

     Skoog’s pair of layups, a 3-pointer by Bob Lusti, a three-point play by Levi Schwartz and a layup by Lusti concluded the scoring for the Braves.

     Rudquist finished with 22 points while Levi Schwartz had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Austen Schwartz dished out 10 assists as the Braves, who went 1-for-18 on 3-pointers, ended the season with a 14-11 record.

     Irsfeld (23), Thielen (16) and Hansmeyer (13) hit double figures for Browerville, which improved to 20-5.

Braves rout Parkers Prairie

     The Braves opened section play with a 78-57 victory over No. 5 Parkers Prairie last Thursday night at Menahga.

     Rudquist led the Braves with 27 points and eight rebounds while Levi Schwartz added 17 points. Austen Schwartz had a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. Jacob Kicker had four steals and Lusti had three steals as the Braves prevailed despite making only 2 of 16 3-point attempts.

     Parkers Prairie ended the season with a 10-14 record.
