Park Rapids Memorial Day service

The Park Rapids Memorial Day service is at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 26 in the Park Rapids Area High School auditorium.

The annual event will begin with prelude music under the direction of Park Rapids High School band director John Cook.

Commander Bob Safrotowich will begin the ceremony with the call to order, followed by the advancement of colors by the Park Rapids Legion Color Guard, Marine Corps. Auxiliary, SAL and Boy Scouts.

Soon after, the MIA and POW flag will be presented by Gary Schwartz, followed by the entrance of the Gold Star Parents with a drumroll.

Safratowich will then take the lead again for a welcoming followed shortly by the national anthem done by the area high school band and the pledge of allegiance.

The invocation will then be done by Chaplain Fred Brown, followed by the tribute to past commander Mike Swanson by Marv Vredenberg.

The area high school band will then take over again once more for the armed forces salute followed by special music form the children’s choir under the direction of Sarah Kaufenberg.

Special to this year’s program includes retired Lieutenant Colonel (retired) special guest speaker Greg Remus and also special music, with “alone yet not alone” by Faith Kern (again under the direction of Kaufenberg) being performed.

The presentation will near its end with a word about freedom and the benediction by Chaplain Fred Brown.

To finalize, the Gold Star Parents will exit again with a drumroll and the retirement of colors will be done by the Color Guards.

All are welcome to attend the event, which is also in commemoration of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Park Rapids American Legion.

Menahga Memorial Day program

The 2014 Memorial Day program in Menahga begins at 10 a.m. at the Menahga School gym. The Menahga VFW Post 6206 Color Guard will present the colors and Pledge of Allegiance.

The VFW Post 6206 Patriot’s Pen Essay winner will be announced, along with the Voice of Democracy winner.

The program will also include music and honoring of veterans with the presentation of 4-H projects.

The placement of the wreath ceremony will be done at the cemetery immediately following the program, weather permitting.

Laporte Memorial Day service

The 2014 Memorial Day program in Nevis will be at Laporte School. A brief ceremony will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery on Highway 200 south of Kabekona at 9 a.m. followed by a brief ceremony at the Catholic Cemetery on the north side of Laporte. The ceremony at the school begins at 10 a.m.

A short ceremony at the Garfield Lake public landing in Laporte will follow the service at the school. The service concludes with taps at the Lakeport Cemetery.

All veterans are welcome to a free dinner at Trinity Lutheran Church in Laporte.

Perham Memorial Day program, breakfast

A Memorial Day program in Perham on Monday will not only honor those who served, but also be serving up a hearty breakfast at Prairie Wind Middle School.

The day starts with Perham Masonic Lodge hosting an all you can eat waffle breakfast, with flavored syrups, beverages and sausage from the Perham Locker, starting at 7 a.m. Then, the Perham VFW Post 4020, American Legion Post 61 and Ladies Auxiliary will put on a traditional Memorial Day service with special music.

Proceeds from the waffle breakfast benefit In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum. Advance tickets are on sale now at the ITOW. Carryout breakfast will be available.

The ITOW Veterans museum is managed by the 501c3 nonprofit History and Cultural Center of East Otter Tail County.
