Melvin "Mel" George Botsford, 88, of Menahga, formerly of Nevis, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga.

Melvin was born Sept. 8, 1924 in Brunsville, Iowa the son of Irene Botsford. He grew up and attended school there and worked on the family farm. He moved to the Nevis area in 1960 and owned and operated Mel's Plumbing and Heating and also Mel's Resort on Lake Belle Taine until he retired. He lived in Park Rapids and most recently has lived in Menahga at the Woodside Manor Assisted Living and then to Green Pines Acres Nursing Home.

Mel enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, snow-mobiling, working on an-tique cars, making stained glass windows, lamps, and traveling to Texas in the wintertime.

Mel was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Akeley and he had been active member of the Nevis Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, where he had served as president.

He is survived by his two daughters, Judy (Vernon) Aukes of Monroe, Ga.; Karen (Don) Heathman of Yorktown, Vt.; grandchildren, Brad (Jessie) Aukes and Brian (Elizabeth) Aukes both of Monroe, Ga.; and Tammy (James) Witt of Yorktown, Va.; Donald Ray Heathman (Toni) of Harlem, Ga.; nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; five stepchildren, Chuck, John, Sue, Jerry and Shelly VanNyhuis.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Arlene Botsford; second wife of eight years, Gloria Botsford; brother, Clarence Stephenson; mother, Irene Cole; stepfather, Edgar Cole; sister, Marie Stephenson; sister-in-law, Lana Stephenson; and great-grandchild, Andrew Heathman.

Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 at Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Park Rapids. Pastor Darrel Morton will officiate.

Visitation: one hour prior to the services.
