McCollum sinks six 3s, scores 29 points in win over Warroad

A 21-4 run midway through the first half sparked the Park Rapids boys basketball team to a 71-57 victory over Warroad Saturday afternoon at the Area High School gym.

Kruzer Lunos hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored Warroad's first 10 points as the Warriors claimed a 10-8 lead. Rilee Johnson had a pair of layups and Mason Long hit a 3-pointer for the Panthers in the early going.

Layups by Johnson and Tyler McCollum tied the game at 14-14 before a jumper by Cory Gartner and a layup and 3-pointer by McCollum gave the Panthers a 21-14 lead at the 10:01 mark.

After consecutive baskets by Warroad made it 21-18, the Panthers scored 14 unanswered points to build a 35-18 lead. Gartner started the run with a layup off a steal, Jordan McCollum and Kyle Goplerud hit jumpers, Tyler McCollum hit a 3-pointer, Kyle Goplerud scored off a rebound and Chris Goplerud made a layup to produce a 17-point lead with 2:31 to play in the first half.

Chris Goplerud's basket off a rebound and two free throws by Jordan McCollum gave Park Rapids a 39-24 cushion at the break.

Tyler McCollum opened the second half with a jumper, two free throws, a layup and two 3-pointers as the Panthers led 53-34 with 9:07 to play.

The Warriors closed the gap to 54-41 with 7:53 remaining before a jumper by Austin Carlson, a layup by Chris Goplerud, two inside baskets by Kyle Goplerud and a pair of 3-pointers by Tyler McCollum pushed the margin to 68-48 with 4:14 to go.

Tyler McCollum made six 3-pointers and finished with 29 points while Kyle Goplerud added 11 points. Zach Jewison grabbed 10 rebounds while Jordan McCollum had eight assists and joined Tyler McCollum and Gartner with three steals as the Panthers improved to 4-5 against Section 8AA teams and 5-9 overall.

Lunos finished with 22 points as Warroad fell to 7-7.

Cardinals sweep season series

Senior center Brian Huber scored 24 points inside in leading Staples-Motley to a 69-59 Mid-State Conference victory over the Panthers Friday night at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the 13:56 mark behind two baskets apiece by Johnson and Kyle Goplerud. Two more layups by Goplerud, a layup by Gartner and a jumper by Jewison kept the Panthers in front 20-13 with 7:14 to play in the first half.

The Cardinals closed out the half with a 19-8 run. Staples-Motley tied the game at 20-20 before a jumper by Johnson ended that 7-0 run. Tyler McCollum's 3-pointer tied the game at 26-26 with 1:46 to go before the Cardinals went on a 6-0 run. Tyler McCollum's jumper at the buzzer pulled the Panthers to within 32-28 at the half.

Huber's three inside baskets to open the second half pushed the Cardinals' lead to 44-34 with 13:59 remaining. After layups by Johnson and Jordan McCollum cut the gap to 46-42 with 10:10 to go, two more inside baskets by Huber and a 3-pointer by Jalen Busker extended the lead to 57-47 with 4:06 to play.

Kyle Goplerud scored twice inside and Jordan McCollum hit a jumper to close the gap to 59-53 with 1:29 left, but the Cardinals hit six free throws and used a dunk by Huber to seal the win.

The win lifted Staples-Motley to 3-2 in conference play and 7-7 overall. The Cardinals defeated Park Rapids 76-70 earlier in the season.

Johnson (16), Kyle Goplerud (16) and Tyler McCollum (11) hit double figures for the Panthers, who made only 1 of 15 3-pointers. Chris Goplerud led the way with seven rebounds and seven assists while Tyler McCollum had five steals. Jordan McCollum added six assists for the Panthers, who fell to 1-5 in the conference.
