Marvin Edward "Bud" Gunkel entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013 at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Bud was born to Edward and Louise (Steinke) Gunkel on June 6, 1923 in Hope, N.D.

In 1945, Bud entered the United States Navy and was a Fireman First Class on board the USS Raymond.

Bud was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He always had his faithful canine companions with him which all carried the name "Mitzie" or "Buck."

Bud worked on road construction as a heavy equipment operator in states from Texas to Montana. His last job was the Bong Bridge in Duluth and all the overpasses.

After retirement he returned to his farm south of Akeley, where he enjoyed feeding the wildlife, gardening and raising chickens.

Bud is survived by his two sisters: Joyce Gunkel of Akeley and Marjorie (Allen) Larson of Cooperstown, N.D. as well as four nieces and four nephews.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Louise Gunkel and his brother Willard Gunkel.

A private family committal service will be held in the spring at the Akeley Cemetery in Akeley.
