Man pleads guilty to raping another man
A Grand Forks man pleaded guilty Thursday to raping another man after a night of drinking.
Raul Luis Suarez, 27, is charged with gross sexual imposition, a Class A felony that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
In July 2007, Suarez went with the victim and his girlfriend to the victim's home in Grand Forks to continue drinking after bars had closed, court records state.
Court documents state the victim went to sleep in his bedroom, and Suarez eventually got into bed with the victim, raped him and left the home. When the victim woke up, his girlfriend took him to Altru's emergency room, where a sexual assault kit was completed, records show.
On Thursday, prosecutor Faye Jasmer said Suarez told authorities that the sex act took place and was not consensual.
Suarez's attorney, Blake Hankey, said his client had not made a plea agreement. Hankey said he may call one or two people to testify at Suarez's May 15 sentencing.
Judge Sonja Clapp of state District Court told Suarez that he would have to register as a sex offender.
Suarez, who is out on bail, has been ordered to have no contact with the victim.
