Man charged with vehicle theft, not registering as sex offender

Bond was set at $250,000 or $25,000 cash with court conditions for a man who is accused of stealing a vehicle from a Wadena residence and violating the terms of his predatory offender registration.

According to Wadena County District Court documents, Michael Wayne Peters, 35, stole a gray pickup with a snowplow attachment on the front from a Wadena business around 4:20 p.m. on Friday, April 15.

A few blocks away, police caught up with the suspect and took him into custody, court records said. In the course of the investigation, authorities learned Peters is a registered sex offender who was on his way from St. Cloud to Detroit Lakes for a job. Predatory offenders are required to register any change of address, which court documents allege Peters failed to do.

He has convictions for first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Hennepin County in February 1998, third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Otter Tail County in January 1998, third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Otter Tail County in December 1998, and failing to register as a sex offender in June 2009 in Wright County.

He faces charges in Wadena County of theft of a motor vehicle and failure to register as a predatory offender -- second offense. Both charges were filed April 18, and his next court appearance was set for April 25.
