Man charged with killing cousin over Otter Tail drug debt appears in court
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – The attorney for the man charged with killing his cousin over a drug debt in Otter Tail County wants more time to review the case.
Michael Kyle Burris, 23, faces felony second-degree murder charges in the death of Scott Burris in 2012.
Michael Kyle Burris’ father, 65-year-old Michael Alan Burris, is also charged in the case and was arrested in Arizona with his son on Aug. 12. The senior Burris did not waive extradition. He is expected to be returned to Minnesota by Friday, WDAY-TV reported.
On Monday, Michael Kyle Burris’ attorney asked for more time to review material.
“The court wants to make sure that the prosecutor has made the necessary filings required to proceed, and that the defense has received the discovery they’ve requested,” defense attorney Joe Parise said.
Scott Burris disappeared from Elizabeth, Minn., in May 2012. His body was found in the Otter Tail River about a month later with a single gunshot wound.
If convicted, Michael Kyle Burris faces up to 40 years in prison. His father has an extradition deadline of Friday.
