Man breaks Fargo squad window after officer tries to drive him home
A police officer trying to help a man, who was walking without shoes, covered in mud and crying, ended up with a squad car with a broken window early this morning.
An officer on patrol spotted a man, later identified as Paul W. Beaupre, walking in the 1800 block of South University Drive in Fargo about 2 a.m. The 22-year-old Fargo man appeared to be under the influence of something and out of concern for his safety, the officer offered to give him a ride home, Fargo Sgt. Mark Lykken said.
"After talking to him, he decided he couldn't just let him walk around," Lykken said.
Beaupre asked to go to his mother's house, but when the officer arrived at her home and was trying to speak with her, a handcuffed Beaupre kicked out the back window and tried to get out, Lykken said.
Beaupre did not get far and was injured by the broken glass. When the officer tried to arrest him, he resisted. When taken to the jail, authorities discovered narcotics and paraphernalia, Lykken said.
Beaupre was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, resisting an officer and criminal mischief.
