Man arrested after high speed chase from Detroit Lakes to Mahnomen County
Park Rapids Minnesota PO Box 111 56470

A man was arrested and several squad cars were damaged in a high speed chase that stretched from Detroit Lakes to Mahnomen County.

The incident started at 11:24 a.m. Tuesday when Detroit Lakes police officers and Becker County deputies attempted to arrest Anthony Lee Libby, 26, no address listed, on two active felony warrants for alleged car theft and third-degree controlled substance crime.

The officers found Libby alone in his vehicle at Minnesota Metal Sales on Richwood Road in Detroit Lakes and converged on him, but he sped past them and fled north on Richwood Road (County Road 21).

Early on, officers attempted to force him to stop using a pursuit intervention technique (PIT maneuver) but were unsuccessful.

The pursuit continued northwards at speeds averaging 70 miles per hour and at times exceeding 100 mph, according to Detroit Lakes Police Chief Tim Eggebraaten.

Spike strips were deployed across the highway in front of Libby’s vehicle (designed to safely deflate car tires) but were not effective. Officers attempted another PIT maneuver but again were unsuccessful.

The chase finally ended just north of Highway 113 about 10 miles east of Waubun in Mahnomen County, when Libby drove into a yard, jumped out of his vehicle and tried to flee on foot. He was caught a short time later and taken to the Becker County Jail, where he remains.

In addition to DL officers and Becker County deputies, the arrest also involved state troopers, tribal police officers, DNR officers and Mahnomen County deputies.

Three police vehicles sustained minor damage, as did Libby’s vehicle.
