Mahnomen Sheriff: Amber alert was fake
Calls flooded the Mahnomen County, Minn., Sheriff's Office Monday night after a fake Amber alert went out via text messaging to cell phones all over the region.
Sheriff Doug Krier said even his daughter called to ask what happened.
"Amber Alert: A seven year old girl was taken by a man driving a newer silver truck ... in the Mahnomen area!" went the message. "Please forward!"
And hundreds did.
Krier said there has been no Amber alert in the county and no report of a missing child.
His office is investigating, he said, and whoever started the chain text message could be charged with falsely reporting a crime.
