Maddock mayor appears in court
Kevin Winson, the mayor of Maddock, N.D., appeared in state district court Monday in Devils Lake on charges of criminal theft, a felony, and trespassing, a misdemeanor, said Benson County State's Attorney James Wang.
Winson asked for a public defender to be appointed to represent him.
He bonded out Monday from the Lake Region jail in Devils Lake, which serves several counties, including Benson, according to a sergeant at the jail.
Wang said he also expects to charge Winson with ingesting an illegal drug, a misdemeanor.
When Winson was arrested and jailed last week on the theft and trespassing charges, his routine urine test showed evidence of methamphetamine, Wang said.
Winson's theft and trespassing charges involved his alleged taking of copper wire and tubing and other property from vacant homes, Wang said.
Maddock is a city of about 480 in Benson County. Winson works for a bowling alley in Carrington, N.D.
