M State Dean of Academic and Student Services, Helene Hedlund, has said the courses being offered in Park Rapids "are intended to provide opportunities for Park Rapids' workforce that enhance their skills as well as meeting the requirements for future programs that may be offered in the community."
If the enrollment is there, people can expect to see additional courses that meet the requirements for an AA transfer degree as well as meeting the requirements for a variety of career options, such as administrative management, leadership and entrepreneurism.
"Start here, Go Anywhere," is the motto of Minnesota State Community and Technical College. Courses offered locally will enable Park Rapids residents to further their education without having to travel to Detroit Lakes or Wadena.
A full range of general courses are available, including Introduction to Leadership, Business Communication, Customer Service, Business Law, Intro to Computer, Power and Communications in Human Relations, College Writing 1, Religion in the Humanities and General Psychology. Each class is four credits, and some may require placement by assessment.
Post Secondary Enrollment Option, or PSEO will hopefully be offered next fall semester, along with several more classes as well as more certificate and diploma options.
Each credit costs $150, therefore each class will cost $450 to attend. All M State classes are transferable to a four-year college.
Classes will be held in the Frank White Education Center in Park Rapids. There will be no parking fees.
There will be grants, student loans and scholarships available to make an education more affordable. Some grants and loans may even cover child-care. A grant for students who have dropped out of college is also available, and will pay for one class as well.
All students must register by Aug. 1, and classes will start Aug. 29. A free M State T-shirt will be given away to students who drop off their information form at the Frank White Education Center. Potential students are asked to register as soon as possible to ensure that the class will indeed be filled by the start of the fall semester.
There will be a drawing for a free laptop computer; all students are encouraged to enter.
