Lutz, Schuldt lead way at Wadena
Lydia Lutz led the field as the Park Rapids girls cross-country team finished third at Tuesday's Wadena-Deer Creek Invitational.
Lutz, who is rated No. 10 in this week's state Class A poll, covered the 4,000-meter course in a winning time of 16:02 in leading the Panthers to third place with 49 points. Little Falls took first with 39 points while Perham was second with 42 points. Park Rapids moved up to the No. 8 spot in this week's state poll while Perham dropped a spot to No. 9.
The Panthers had three runners in the top 10 spots with Shelby Pierce finishing fourth in 16:28 and Summer Ellefson taking ninth in 17:01. Rounding out the Panthers' varsity were Lora Remus (20th in 17:59), Megan Olson (21st in 18:15), Kaylee Hil-manowski (22nd in 18:23) and Morgan Olson (30th in 19:06).
In the boys meet, Nevis' Bryon Schuldt led the field by covering the 5,000-meter course in a winning time of 16:36. Schuldt is rated No. 4 in this week's state poll.
Isaac Overmyer finished sixth in 18:06 as the Panthers placed sixth with 135 points. Perham, which is ranked No. 3 in this week's state poll, ran away with the title in this 11-team meet with 24 points.
Rounding out Park Rapids' varsity were Bailey Mueller (31st in 19:38), Tanner Otterness (32nd in 19:40), Jake Waggoner (35th in 19:52), Ryan McBrady (36th in 19:58), Jacob Hays (45th in 20:46) and Austin Carlson (46th in 20:53).
United North Central took fourth in the girls meet with 121 points. Leading the Warriors were Andrea Korvela (25th in 18:43), Sarah Kuismi (26th in 18:45), Madlin Lausten (27th in 18:54), Jill Isaacson (28th in 18:57) and Joy Haataja (31st in 19:08).
The Warriors fielded an incomplete team in the boys race. Ryan Johnson (38th in 20:15), Luke Graham (53rd in 21:24) and Jayde Pickar (59th in 22:38) led the Warriors.
In the junior varsity race, Aaron Holk (13th in 21:19), Brad Eischens (14th in 21:20), Nate Carlson (16th in 21:51), Adam Mackley (36th in 23:15), Cody Brumbaugh (37th in 23:33), Matt Konshok (41st in 24:02), Ben Kading (49th in 27:14), Nick Schulz (51st in 28:25) and Nathanel Rairdon (52nd in 28:26) competed for the Panthers.
Jacob Bridgman (24th in 15:22), Cole Coborn (33rd in 16:09) and Zach Nelson (42nd in 20:54) competed for the Panthers in the boys 3,200-meter junior high race.
"I thought the runners did a good job. To have three girls in the top 10 and not win shows you just how tough Little Falls and Perham are. It's exciting to have the girls battling with Perham. Hopefully it's one we can win as the season continues," said Park Rapids head coach Kerry Johnson. "The guys did a good job as well. Isaac ran a smart race and did well. We just need to move a couple of guys up a bit closer to him, and I know that's possible. The guys are getting after it day in and day out. They just need to keep chipping away at those times."
The Panthers compete in the Pelican Rapids Invitational on Monday.
