Lutefisk and lefse: Celebrating all things Scandinavian in Nevis
Nevis citizens will celebrate their Scandinavian heritage with the 6th annual Uff Da Days Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29.
A search for the Swedish krona (coin) will begin Thursday, Aug. 27, with clues posted on the Muskie pavillion. The successful treasure hunter will claim $100.
Friday's kick-off includes bingo at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church with proceeds donated to the Nevis Baseball Association.
Bullwinkle's and the Iron Horse will be sites of merriment, offering specials all day, along with excellent food and drink.
Activities resume at 8 a.m. Saturday on Nevis' main thoroughfare with coffee, donuts and sweet rolls served at the concessions stand.
The craft/flea market/ rummage sale begins when the clock strikes 10 along the Heartland Trail.
The food stand opens at 10 a.m. with hotdogs, brats, hamburgers, soft drinks and all the trimmings on the menu.
At 11 a.m. the long-awaited dinner of Swedish meatballs, lutefisk and lefse will be served until 2 p.m. at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church.
Kids games and contests begin at 11 a.m. in Muskie Park, including a bean bag toss, duck pond game, gunny sack races, wash-a-way tatoos, coin hunt and a basketball toss. Prizes galore will be awarded.
A climbing wall, fun for all ages, will be available all day.
New this year, try your luck on the Plinko board. One dollar garners three attempts for cash and prizes. Or catch your Uff Da stimulus package via a new cash machine game, which offers prizes.
Bring your grill, meat of choice and favorite sauce for the new BBQ Cook-off. Sell your samples all day, but save enough for the judges. The contest begins at 5 p.m. Entry fee is $10. Call John at 652-2715 for the Uff Da rules.
The Nevis Community Education program will hold a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at 1 p.m. Call Bill or Nolan at 652-3500, ext., 6 to participate.
At 2 p.m., kids 12 and under are invited to join the "brain freeze" ice cream eating contest, sponsored by Northwind Grocery.
At 2 p.m. the beer garden opens. Meanwhile, singer and guitar player Jeff Hirsch will entertain in Muskie Park until 4 p.m.
At 3 p.m. the egg toss begins, with the best pitcher and catcher claiming a prize. (Otherwise, the yolks on you.)
"Frankly Country" will strike up the band at 4 p.m. with street dancin' and toe tappin' fun until 8 p.m.
At 6 p.m., the Big Parade will head through Nevis, with entries welcome.
The Hit Man will lead karaoke on Main starting at 8 p.m.
Prize drawings will be ongoing Saturday for those who've purchased the keepsake Uffda Day button. A dollar buys a chance at one of 50-plus prizes.
Uff Da Day T-shirts will be on sale as will the official Uff Da Day button, garlands for the ladies, Viking helmets and Scandinavian flags.

The nonprofit organization donates proceeds from the event to local causes.
