LUELLA I. KUISIMI
83, a lifelong Menahga area resident, peacefully passed from this life to eternal life on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at the Green Pine Acres Nursing Home surrounded by her loved ones, to be reunited with her husband who had entered heaven just three and one half months earlier.
Luella was born on June 23, 1929 to Charles and Mary (Isola) Kyllonen on the family farm in Runeberg Township west of Menahga. She attended country school in Runeberg through the eighth grade and then went on to attend the Menahga High School from where she graduated in 1947. As a young woman Luella attended Teachers Training in Park Rapids for one year. She then taught country school in Minnesota for two years and in North Dakota for two years.
On April 18, 1954, Luella was united in marriage to Leonard W. Kuismi. This union was blessed with five sons and four daughters. They purchased the Kuismi family farm and later her family's farm. Luella worked alongside her husband in milking and caring for their dairy herd and raising a big garden to feed the family fresh produce.

She also devoted herself to making a loving home for her large family. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious pannukakku, caramel rolls, flatbread and puuro. She was a skilled seamstress who sewed many dresses for her young daughters and later many bridesmaid dresses when her children got married.
For many years, Luella managed the family strawberry business where they raised the delicious berries and retailed them to many loyal customers.
Over the years, Luella made miles of beautiful rugs most of which she gave as gifts. After retiring from the full time commitments of farming, Luella and Leonard traveled to 48 of the 50 states, as well as Mexico, Canada, Russia, Sweden and most importantly, Finland. Luella had placed her faith in the Lord and was a life time member of the Pickeral Lake Apostolic Lutheran Church near Wolf Lake.
She will be lovingly remembered by her nine children: Judy (Don) Maninga of Menahga, James Kuismi of Menahga, Eva (Kevin) York of Frazee, Jack (Dawn Schuldt) Kuismi of Maple Grove, Dave (Linda) Kuismi of Menahga, Fay (Leonard) Kirscht of Rogers, Don (Cindy) Kuismi of Evansville, Lora (David Dixon) Kuismi of Kimball, and Fred (Angie) Kuismi of Eden Prairie; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Jane (Elmer) Bohjanen of Menahga; her brother, Charles "Billy" (Nancy) Kyllonen of Crystal, her sister-in-law, Gloria Ollila of Ramsey, two aunts: Vi Salmela and Nina Hepokoski both of Menahga, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Luella was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and one brother, Russell.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Pickeral Lake Apostolic Lutheran Church in Park Rapids with James Yliniemi officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cardini-Pearson Funeral Home in Menahga and for one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be made in the family plot in the Alajoki Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be her daughters and daughters in laws. The honorary casket bearers will be her sons and sons-in-law. Following the funeral service a luncheon will be provided for all. To view the video tribute and to leave on line condolences please visitwww.cardinipearson.com.
