Lorimer "Lorm" Edward Johnson, 94, of North Oaks, formerly of Virginia and Lake Vermilion, died Monday, December 30, 2013 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Lorimer was born Feb. 20, 1919 in Duluth, the son of Swedish immigrant parents, Gustav and Caroline (Hedstrom) Johnson. He grew up with his four brothers in the Woodland area of Duluth. He was a 1938 graduate of Central High School.

Lorimer enlisted into the U.S. Army in the fall of 1941, serving as a Tech Sergeant in a weapons platoon in the Attu/Aleutian Campaign. It is remarkable all five Johnson boys served in the U.S. military during World War II. After 4.5 years of service, Lorimer was honorably discharged late in 1945.

He earned his accounting degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He began his career with U.S. Steel/Oliver Iron Mining in Duluth in 1947.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Swanson June 28, 1952 in Duluth. In 1964, he was transferred to U.S. Steel Purchasing Office in Chicago, Ill. After serving nine years there he was transferred as a Resident Purchasing Agent serving Minnesota Ore Operations/Minntac at Mountain Iron.

In 1983, after 35 years of service Lorimer decided to take retirement. After retiring, he kept busy in various capacities at the Presbyterian churches he belonged to, including Hope Presbyterian Church in Virginia, Minn. and Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City, Ariz.

He also loved to work with wood. Having built a cabin, garage and other buildings on Lake Vermilion he also built custom furniture for it. His favorite pastimes included fishing, playing golf and being with his family and his grand-daughters.

Shirley and he were very fortunate to have spent many winters in Sun City, Ariz. and many summers where he truly cherished, their cabin at Lake Vermilion.

Lorimer will be remembered for his sense of humor, his integrity, his sharp mind and his loving nature.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley of North Oaks; three children, Jan (Steve) McDaniels of Shoreview, David Johnson of Proctor, and Lori (Kent) Cease of Park Rapids; three adoring granddaughters, Lindsay, Katherine and Jasmine; sister-in- law, Donna (Arnold) Johnson of Duluth; nieces and nephews, Bruce, Dean, Dale, Ron, Julie, Cindy, Brian and Barbara.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Richard, Walden, Leonard and Bernard.

Funeral service: Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 at Waverly Gardens Presbyterian Center Chapel in North Oaks; address 5919 Centerville Road, North Oaks, MN 55127; phone 651-765-4000. Pastor/Chaplain Bruce Nelson will officiate.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 at Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Park Rapids. Also one hour prior to the services at the Waverly Chapel on Monday.

Military Honors will be held.

A reception will be hosted following the services.

Interment: Forrest Hill Cemetery in Duluth.
