Local wrestlers qualify for state NYWA tournament

  Park Rapids’ Cody Dravis and Justin Dravis brought home championships from this year’s Northland Youth Wrestling Association State Tournament April 4-7 at Rochester.

     Cody Dravis was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the grade 5-6 division by pinning his way to the championship. Dravis won all four of his matches by pinning Benson’s Alex Wrobleski in 18 seconds, Luverne’s Scott Edwards in 26 seconds, Austin’s Isaac Arjes in 38 seconds and Detroit Lakes’ Brennan Sather in 26 seconds to win the title in the 140-pound class.

     Justin Dravis also won all four of his matches in the grade 7/8 150-pound division. Dravis pinned Tartan’s Jesse DeCarlo in 50 seconds, defeated Pierz’s Brett Kapsner 2-0, pinned Spring Valley’s Christopher Bain in 1:16 and defeated Rocori’s Nicholas Warne 3-2 in the title match.

     The Dravis brothers join Tyler Safratowich and Ben Baumgartner as the only Park Rapids wrestlers to win state titles at the NYWA tournament. Cody Dravis is the first Park Rapids wrestler to earn Outstanding Wrestler honors in his grade and weight division.

     Two other Park Rapids wrestlers placed while five other Park Rapids wrestlers qualified for the state tournament.

     Nolan Booge went 3-2 to finish fourth in the grade 7/8 130-pound division while Ashton Clark went 4-2 to finish fifth in the grade 5/6 75-pound class.

     Also qualifying for the state tournament from Park Rapids were Wrigley Clark (who went 0-2 in the kindergarten 40-pound class), Kaden Safratowich (who went 0-2 in the grade 5/6 88-pound division), Landen Burlingame (who went 1-2 in the grade 7/8 85-pound division), Jared Sunram (who went 2-2 in the grade 7/8 110-pound class) and Logan Johnson (who went 1-2 in the grade 7/8 135-pound division).

     This marked the fifth state appearance for the Dravis brothers. Booge has qualified for four state tournaments while Safratowich qualified for his third state meet. This was the second state tournament for Ashton Clark, Burlingame and Sunram while Wrigley Clark and Johnson made their state debuts.

     United North Central had four wrestlers place at the NYWA state tournament.

     Brock Berttunen went 5-1 to finish third in the grade 1/2 75-pound division, Hank Tellers went 3-2 to finish fourth in the grade 1/2 80-pound class, Tate Usher went 4-2 to place fourth in the grade 1/2 85-pound division and Isaiah Usher went 3-2 to finish fifth in the grade 1/2 75-pound division.

     Also qualifying for the state tournament for UNC were Collin Olson (who went 0-2 in the grade 1/2 61-pound class), Gabe Hendrickson (who went 1-2 in the grade 1/2 61-pound class), Wyatt Olson (who went 1-2 in the grade 1/2 70-pound division), Ethan Hendrickson (who went 2-2 in the grade 3/4 60-pound division) and Torrey Carlson (who went 1-2 in the grade 3/4 110-pound class).

     All of those wrestlers qualified for state by finishing in the top three spots at the Region 5 tournament at Bemidji on March 25.

     Claiming region titles were Cody Dravis, Sunram, Booge, Justin Dravis, Isaiah Usher, Tellers and Ethan Hendrickson. Placing second were Wrigley Clark, Ashton Clark, Safratowich, Johnson, Collin Olson and Wyatt Olson while Burlingame, Gabe Hendrickson, Berttunen, Tate Usher and Carlson took third.

     Also placing for Park Rapids at the region tournament were Hazen Milbeck (fourth in the kindergarten 40-pound division), Zach Nelson (fifth in the grade 7/8 135-pound division), Zach Hocking (sixth in the grade 7/8 160-pound division) and Logan Veo (sixth in the grade 7/8 235-pound division).
