Monsrud will be recognized for her contributions to the society at the annual awards banquet, The Sylvies, today (Saturday), Jan. 22, at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.

The Special Event Volunteer All Star Award has been given to Monsrud for showing endless enthusiasm for helping others for many years. Her efforts as an area coordinator and as a Park Rapids group leader earned her the award.

Monsrud partnered with Denise Pederson to launch a new MS group in Park Rapids two years ago. Both women received Rookie Volunteer All Star Sylvies last year and Monsrud was determined to establish Park Rapids as a new site for Walk MA: Christopher & Banks Walk presented by Walser. Under her leadership, the walk was made possible and raised more than $16,000.

Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is diagnosed with MS - an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to an MS-free world. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men affected by the disease. More than 400,000 people in the United States and 2.5 million worldwide live with MS.
