Local golfers advance to Mid-Minn finals

Crosby-Ironton played its best round of the season last Wednesday to prevent the Park Rapids boys golf team from qualifying for the Mid-Minnesota Conference Championship.

The Panthers entered the final conference meet at Headwaters Country Club with a 6.5-point advantage over Crosby-Ironton for the fourth and final spot to advance to the conference championship.

A pair of 79s by James Cragun and Tom Burgstalen led the Rangers to a 416 team score and 34 points. Park Rapids carded a 442 and earned 24 points to finish fifth in the final standings.

Dustin Bethel's 87 at the No. 3 position, Nate Carlson's 87 at the No. 4 position, Ian Johnson's 84 at the No. 1 spot and Ed Carlson's 87 at the No. 2 position led the Panthers.

United North Central finished sixth with a 445 and 22.5 points. Frank Moren's 81 at the No. 1 spot and Lane Hillukka's 83 at the No. 2 spot led the Warriors.

Kyle Magnuson's 81 at the No. 1 position led Nevis, which shot a 483 and earned 13.50 points.

Staples-Motley won all four conference meets and finished with 208.50 points. Pequot Lakes finished second with 139 points, Wadena-Deer Creek was third with 117.50 points and C-I took fourth with 103 points. Park Rapids was fifth with 99.50 points, followed by Pine River-Backus with 84 points, UNC with 83.50 points and Nevis with 66 points.

In addition to the top-four teams, eight individuals qualified for the conference championships based on their three best meets. Johnson was the top individual qualifier with 244 strokes while Magnuson was second with 255 strokes. UNC had the next three qualifiers in Tyler Meech (258), Hillukka (258) and Moren (260). Ed Carlson also qualified with 260 strokes while Bethel claimed the final spot with 264 strokes.

The Mid-Minnesota Conference Championship was held Monday at Pequot Lakes.

Team scores: Staples-Motley (404) 45 points, Wadena-Deer Creek (416) 36 points, Crosby-Ironton (416) 34 points, Pequot Lakes (412) 31 points, Park Rapids (442) 24 points, United North Central (445) 22.5 points, Pine River-Backus (455) 19 points, Nevis (483) 13.5 points.

Final team standings (after four meets): Staples-Motley 208.50 points, Pequot Lakes 139 points, Wadena-Deer Creek 117.50 points, Crosby-Ironton 103 points, Park Rapids 99.50 points, Pine River-Backus 84 points, United North Central 83.50 points, Nevis 66 points.
