Letters: Thanks for donations to Area 8 Envirothon

Many thanks to those who helped to sponsor this year's Area 8 Envirothon held at Bemidji State Park on April 22. This year's contributors from Hubbard County included Mantrap Conservation Club Auxiliary, R.D.Offutt Company - Midwest and Hubbard County COLA. Their generous donations helped make this event possible.

Congratulations to the winning teams from Lake of the Woods, Grand Rapids, and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley schools that will compete in the State Envirothon on May 18 at Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch near Stewartville. Seventeen teams of high school students competed from Area 8 including Menahga, Kelliher, Lake of the Woods, Grand Rapids, Park Rapids, W-H-A, and Clearbrook-Gonvik schools. The Hubbard County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) thanks them and their teachers for their participation.

Throughout the day students rotated among five learning stations presented by natural resource professionals. Topics included wetlands, wildlife, forestry, soils and a current environmental issue. Working in teams of five, students answered 20 questions at each station and also presented an 8-10 minute oral presentation before a panel of judges on the topic of biodiversity.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Envirothon.

Marilyn Berry, Hubbard County SWCD
