Letters: Facebook group supports German

Email

Twelve days ago, I created a Facebook group to find others who do not want German classes to be cut from Park Rapids schools. Twelve days and it has grown from one member to 246! Over 200 members, joining for one cause - because we do not believe that German should be discontinued. Spanish isn't a universal language, more common on our continent, but globally, German is important.

German is the most widely spoken language in Europe and the third most popular language worldwide.

Germany has the third strongest economy and is the leading export nation in the world. German companies have created 700,000 jobs in the United States, and U.S. companies have created approximately the same number of jobs in Germany.

In 2000, 42.8 million Americans reported having German heritage. That's the largest single heritage group in the U.S.

One in 10 books in the world are written in German. Only 5 percent of those are translated into English.

So far, 246 of us have joined together in one group, "Save German class in PR!!!" because we all believe in the importance of German being taught in Park Rapids. Members of the school board: remember over 200 past students and community members have experienced learning the language and have seen what a valuable asset German really is globally.

Please, do not take this opportunity away from current and future students of Park Rapids.

Please, get involved. If you read the facts, the personal experiences of us who have learned the language, and you too feel the importance of German being kept in Park Rapids schools, get involved. Write letters, make phone calls, and please show up at the next board meeting with us.

Holly Hill, Park Rapids Class of 2008, German student of four years
