Letter: Thanks for working to extend PUC deadline

Friends of the Headwaters wants to thank all of the people in local government, clubs, and organizations who worked so hard to ensure that the PUC received crucial letters of support regarding our request for an extended comment period.

As a result of these efforts, the Public Utilities Commission has announced that they will extend the route comment period through May 30, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. We hope that this extension will provide Hubbard County’s seasonal residents with a chance to weigh in on this important issue. Interested citizens will find more information about the Sandpiper route (and the recent addition of Line 3) at and sippiheadwaters

We realize that there’s some discomfort whenever people take a stand in a small town. We know that sticking your neck out, saying, “Uh, maybe this doesn’t bode well for Park Rapids and our water resources” is a tricky business, especially when there are powerful interests claiming that the pipelines are just a lucky boon, that the only issue is how to spend all the sweet moolah Enbridge is going to throw our way.

So we are especially grateful that Friends of the Headwaters’ supporters are well-informed, generous, and, even more importantly, principled that they’ve chosen actions consistent with their values and their concern for the region, our shared environment, and local water quality.

Thank you for your support!
