Letter: Shelter gearing up for annual auction
We do as much as we possibly can to be financially self-sufficient.
In 2012, 38 percent of our gross income came from fundraising.
The re-sale of donated new and used items is one of the shelter’s numerous fundraising programs. Donated items are processed, sorted and cleaned, then sold throughout the year at several different venues. The shelter holds 4 rummage sales, 2 book sales and a Holiday Bazaar each year.
Big ticket items are stored back throughout the year for the annual (Jokela) auction in August.
Additionally, donated items are used for the silent auctions at the January and November dinners.
The donated items program collectively provides on average about 30 percent of our total fundraising revenue a year.
The donated items program is “green” both ecologically and economically. Donated items find new homes and purposes so less ends up in the landfill.
It helps customers stretch their green (dollars).
And it provides much needed green (dollars) to support the shelter.
Shelter manager Rochelle Hamp has been managing this program successfully for the last 5 years, along with staff and volunteers.
The shelter’s pole shed is the primary drop off site for donations.
The staff plays a key role assisting customer’s drop offs, as well as going out on donation pick up appointments.
Volunteers help set up and run all of the rummage sales, the dinner silent auctions and the annual Jokela auction.
We have worked collectively very well over the years.
The 14th annual auction is Aug. 12 this year.
We are so blessed. We continually receive a bounty of beautiful items from the public throughout the year. I get excited for the customer’s knowing much they appreciate getting these items at affordable prices.
Right now, however, we are in dire need of some large ticket item donations for this year’s auction. Please consider donating any unused or unwanted boat, car, RV, snowmobile etc. to the animal shelter for this important event. All donations are tax deductable.
For more information please call the shelter at 237-7100.
