Letter: Pray for peace, Pray for Boston

Email

As we go about our daily lives in small-town Minnesota – lives of routine, family, friends, peace and security – our attention has been turned once again to an American catastrophe: evil, cowardly terrorist bombings have savaged the beautiful, historic city of Boston! Now all Americans are Bostonians!

America has a most remarkable, incredibly long history of our people who join forces to combat natural and man-made disasters and thereby protect and maintain the common good. America’s fervent desire for peace, prosperity and the rule of law is the envy of the world!

As we daily continue our experiment in democracy, we are reminded of the words of a 17th century English poet and cleric, John Donne. Donne’s words were a clarion call for love, peace and universal brotherhood:

“No man is an island, entire of itself.

Each is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

Each man’s death diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind.

Therefore, send not to know for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.”

John Donne

Meditation 17, 1624

May these heartfelt words strike a ringing chord, calling for peace and national unity today for all who read them.

Pray for peace. Pray for Boston.
