Letter: Gay people have the same rights as others
All those who know me know that I am a proud, openly gay man. So perhaps it will surprise at least a few to learn I don't believe in gay marriage. I don't believe there is any such thing as a gay marriage.
Consider the following question. When I vote in the upcoming election, will I be casting a "gay" vote? In writing this open letter, am I exercising my right to "gay free speech?" Does my right to attend an open meeting or public event reflect my "gay right to assemble?" Is my gun ownership protected by my special "gay right to own and bear arms?" Of course not.
There is no such thing as a gay right to vote or a right to gay free speech, a gay right to assemble or a gay right to own and bear arms. And there can never be a right to gay marriage, because at the end of the day there is no such thing as a gay marriage. There's just marriage. And gay people have the same right to it as anybody else.
