Letter: Don't let election process be undermined

Email

Is America still a "Beacon of Democracy" where elections matter and majority rule prevails or are we descending into a "Mob Rule" nation where special interest groups exert their power and influence to undermine the democratic process? A careful examination of recent events in Wisconsin and other states would suggest the latter scenario could be occurring.

The wide chasm between public sector "Pay & Perks" vs. private sector compensation has been growing for decades due, in large part, to the mutually beneficial relationship between liberal democrats and their public union leadership supporters. In short, liberal politicians at several levels of government have "caved-in" to excessive public union demands in return for partisan campaign funding and voter support. As a result, the wide disparity in compensation and fringe benefits (health care, pensions, etc.) between public sector employees and private sector workers has reached record levels and continues to grow. Wisconsin is one of 41 states where public employees earn substantially higher pay and benefits than private workers in the same state.

Federal civil servants earned average pay and benefits totaling $123,049 in 2009 compared to $61,051 total compensation earned by private sector workers. Importantly, fringe benefit compensation provided to these public employees ($41,791) was four times higher than private sector workers. Less severe, but similar compensation disparities have occurred in numerous state and local governments nationwide resulting in unsustainable tax burdens for the general public.

Last November, voters across the nation let their voices be heard. Elections matter! Now, we are witnessing, liberal politicians and their supporters who are unwilling to accept the results of the "ballot box" are trying to exert their will by "mob rule" tactics. Equally disturbing are the actions of public teachers who are not showing up for work by providing phony medical excuses. What message does this send to millions of impressionable young people nationwide?

America deserves better! Taxpayers deserve better! Let your voice be heard through your elected representatives. We should not allow the democratic election process be undermined and kidnapped by the "mob rule" tactics of special interest public union leaders and their supporters.
