Legion splits pair of doubleheaders
The Park Rapids American Legion baseball team split a pair of doubleheaders to improve to 7-3 on the season.
The Legion followed a 4-3 loss in the first game to Sebeka on June 25 with a 20-3 victory in the second game.
On Friday night, the Legion rebounded from a 12-4 loss to Staples with a 3-2 victory in the second game of this home doubleheader.
Park Rapids concluded the regular season with a game at Bertha-Hewitt Monday and a game at Walker Tuesday. The subdistrict tournament begins Friday.
Legion splits with Sebeka
Sebeka limited Park Rapids to only four hits in the first game before the Legion erupted for 16 runs in the third inning of the second game to earn the split.
In the first game, Park Rapids scored once in the second and twice in the fourth while Sebeka scored two runs in both the first and second innings for the win.
Dylan Walsh doubled to lead off the second and scored on Kody Walsh's sacrifice fly. Park Rapids scored its other two runs in the fourth on singles by Dylan Walsh, Dan Ricke and Levi Erickson and an error.
Tucker Coborn started and took the loss in that game.
In the second game, a double by Cory Odland and singles by Dylan Walsh, Ricke and Erickson gave the Legion a 4-0 lead in the first.
The Legion then scored 16 runs in the third inning to put the game away. Cody Schirmers hit a grand-slam homer and three-run double in that inning. Erickson, Odland and Dylan Walsh also had doubles while Ricke, Erickson, Kyle Kanten and Odland had singles. Coborn capped the inning with a two-run homer.
Odland was the winning pitcher in that game.
Legion Staples split games
Staples used a seven-run fifth inning to seal the win in the opener before Coborn's six-hit complete game lifted the Legion to the split.
A walk to Schirmers, an RBI single by Odland and an RBI double by Coborn helped Park Rapids tie the game at 2-2 in the first and a double by Coborn, a walk to Dylan Walsh, an RBI single by Kevin McMorrow and a run-scoring grounder by Erickson kept the Legion within 5-4 in the third.
But Staples sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth to seal the win.
Coborn went 2 for 3 to pace the Legion's six-hit attack. Odland took the loss.
In the second game, Coborn singled with two outs and scored on an error in the first to give the Legion a 1-0 lead.
Staples scored twice in the bottom of the inning before Park Rapids produced the winning runs in the third. Odland and Coborn singled with two outs and scored on Dylan Walsh's two-run double.
Coborn went 2 for 2 and scored twice as the Legion was held to six hits.
