A late rally fell short as the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team saw its season end with a 7-6 playoff loss to Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale Thursday night.

BHV claimed a 7-1 lead by scoring once in the first, three times in the second, once in the fourth and twice in the sixth.

Park Rapids threatened in the second when Kyle Goplerud and Brad Eischens singled and Paul Prenevost was hit by a pitch. But the Legion left the bases loaded.

The Legion scored in the fifth on David Dirks' double, an error and Drew Bade's run-scoring grounder.

Park Rapids mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh by scoring five runs. Eischens singled, Dirks was hit by a pitch and Tyler McCollum walked to load the bases with one out. A two-run double by Drew Bade, a run-scoring grounder by Cory Odland, an RBI double by Chris Goplerud and a wild pitch made it 7-6. Kyle Goplerud and Zach Eystad walked to load the bases, but BHV held on for the win.

Eischens went 2 for 4 to lead Park Rapids' seven-hit attack. Bade took the loss, allowing nine hits and striking out three over five innings. Kyle Goplerud struck out five of the seven batters he faced in relief.

Legion, Staples split

The Legion ended the regular season by splitting games at Staples last Tuesday night.

Staples won the first game 3-2 while Park Rapids prevailed 5-4 in five innings in the second game.

In the first game, Cody Brumbaugh singled and scored on Prenevost's single in the third while Prenevost singled and scored on Kyle Goplerud's double in the sixth to account for Park Rapids' two runs. Dirks started and took the loss.

In the second game, Brumbaugh went 3 for 4, scored the winning run and picked up the win as the Legion split. Both teams had six hits.
