Lawdermilt's hat trick lifts EGF to 9-2 win over Panthers
Zack Lawdermilt's hat trick led East Grand Forks to a 9-2 victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team in the season opener Saturday afternoon at East Grand Forks.
Lawdermilt scored a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal in the first period as the Green Wave jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Kolton Aubol also scored a shorthanded goal and Colton Poolman scored as EGF held a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period.
Noah MacPherson scored off a rebound on a shot by Sam Coborn as the Panthers cut the deficit to 4-1 at the 3:22 mark of the second period. But EGF responded on goals by Lawdermilt and Dixon Bowen to carry a 6-1 lead into the final period. EGF held a 13-7 advantage in shots in the second period.
Levi Erickson and Coborn assisted on goal by Benson Ringle to start the third period, but East Grand Forks concluded the scoring on goals by Tyler Hajicek and Aubol.
Park Rapids goalie Scott Smith finished with 29 saves as EGF finished with a 38-14 edge in shots in this battle of Section 8A rivals.
