Laporte Days lakeside village charm
The annual Laporte Days, hosted by the Laporte-Benedict Lions, will be held Aug. 12 to 14, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There will be many festive and traditional activities scheduled throughout the weekend.
A flea market will start on Friday and run until Sunday afternoon after the grand parade. Anyone interested in hosting a booth call Shirley Schmidt at 218-224-2601. Youth groups may set up a booth with no charge; otherwise the cost is $10 per day or $20 for all three days.
Friday's activities start off with rock 'n' roller skating will be held at the Laporte School for children from 6:30 to 9 p.m., door prizes will be awarded throughout the night.
Saturday morning starts bright and early with breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. in the basement of the Baptist Church with a free-will donation.
The Harold Cotant Fly-In is from 7:30 to 10 a.m. with regular planes coming for a pancake breakfast. The Paul Bunyan Flyers, a radio control club, will show model plane demos from 10 a.m. until sunset.
From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. there will be a pig roast and open house hosted by the Lakeport Fire Department, as well as a water fight to cool off from the summer heat.
Also, starting at 4:30 p.m. are the kid's relay races along the DNR Trail and a scavenger hunt at the flagpole by the DNR trail.
At 7 p.m. there will be bingo at the Lakeport Fire Hall.
Finishing off the events for the day is Rock Sober Funtime at the Laporte School football field.
Starting off the last day of the festival is a pre-parade dog search and rescue demonstration.
Kiddy parade lineup starts at 2 p.m., and the kiddy parade will begin at 2:30 (no animals or motorized vehicles allowed) with prizes to give away. The big parade starts at 3 p.m., with lineup along the School House hill.
At 4 p.m. there will be a K-9 demonstration along the DNR trail, and kids can hunt for buried treasure in the money pit south of the flagpole at 4:30 p.m.
At 5 p.m. the raffle winners will be announced, ending the weekend's events until next year.
