Laporte 4th/5th celebration delivers fun, food, fireworks
BY Sarah smith
Laporte’s 4th on the 5th celebration featured the usual events, and one not so usual.
A fight at the 3rd Base Bar & Grill ended the night. By the time deputies arrived on the scene early Sunday morning, a private vehicle had transported the combatants to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries and the donnybrook was over.
But that was just a minor hiccup in a day that was sunny and perfect for entertaining company from out of town.
A flea market on the Paul Bunyan Trail attracted buyers, traders and hagglers.
The Lakeport Fire Department’s open house and pig roast filled the fire hall with diners savoring the smoked pork.
Later bingo and a meat raffle filled the Fire Department.
It was a day of fun and games, ending with fireworks.
Many residents were buoyed by the fact that the Hubbard County Board approved final plans for a recreation center in town and even provided funding to get the ground broken this year.
It will be finished in 2016. The project includes a long rectangular shelter, a playground with equipment and a park. Laporte residents have big plans to use the facility for most town events.
The day included two parades, a pie eating contest, races, games and a men’s beauty pageant, for the brave fellows who don pantyhose.
