Lantern-lit program changed to a hike at Itasca State Park on Saturday, January 7.
Due to poor snow conditions, the Lantern Lit event scheduled at Itasca State Park on Saturday, January 7, 2012, has been changed to a lantern lit hike. Hikers will be following the South Entrance Road. The route will be on packed snow. Participants need to wear footwear with slip-resistant soles and good treads.
This popular family-friendly event provides an opportunity to hike on a trail illuminated by the warm glow of lanterns. Park visitors can then warm up around a cozy fire at the trail head and roast marshmallows or enjoy a hot drink in the visitor center.
The lantern-lit trail is relatively flat and easy, so that kids and beginners can feel comfortable participating. The route follows the South Entrance Road and is illuminated for 1 mile.
Hikers can access the route from the parking lot at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center. The route will be illuminated from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012
This event is free, but a vehicle permit is required to enter Minnesota state parks. Vehicle permits ($5 for a one-day permit or $25 for a year-round permit) can be purchased at the park.
