A safety training drill at Lamb Weston/RDO Frozen last week simulated an ammonia leak.

The drill began at 8 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 with a 911 call to Hubbard County dispatch about the emergency leak. Someone had been exposed to ammonia and was in need of help.

The Park Rapids Fire Department arrived on scene and began to talk with Lamb Weston officials and North Memorial Ambulance Service EMTs about a plan to evacuate and get victims out of the plant safely.

Plant manager Mic Ryan said a drill is done every two years.

“It’s part of our ongoing efforts to keep our safety initiatives up to date,” he said.

After the drill, those involved grade themselves and talk about what went well and what could use improvement.

“The goal is to keep the responders safe and also the workers safe in the plant,” Ryan said.

Bob Kole, with the Ammonia Safety Training institute was on hand for the training and provided insight as well.

Ryan said the drills are helpful in building a relationship with emergency departments in case of a real emergency.
